Happy Vinayaka Chathurthi

home made Ganapthis/Vinayakas/Ganesh with clay and colors

Happy Vinayaka Chathurthi to everyone! Enjoy our "home made" Ganapathis. This is how a few of us spent our Friday night last night - by making our own clay Ganeshas. This is the first time I have done and will not be the last time :). This was so much fun!

This is so wonderful! I love Ganpatis. Are you going to do visarjan, too?

I enrolled in a pottery class a couple of weeks ago, after Medha had so much fun with it over summer. Because I love the form of the elephant-god, I fashioned a modern Ganesh which I was able to glaze today. It is probably getting fired tonight and I might have it by Monday night if it does not explode in the kiln! I was also able to smoothen another one I made and it's going in tonight for its first firing, too. I'm pretty excited but my Ganpati's are nowhere as beautiful as yours.

Do you cook modaks, too? Or is that mainly in Maharashtra?

Cool. Do put the pics up on your blog for us to see. I am not that talented in the creative area but the friends I made them with were really creative and that helped a lot. We are going to do the visargan in a lake nearby this coming Saturday. So the Ganesha will be in our house until then. I did not make modaks but a form of it - I made rice undrallu and undralla payasam. I will post them as soon as possible.

Mika, Jeff and Ashwini - thank you!

Yes. I agree. We spent around 3-4 hrs on these Ganeshas but it didn't feel like we spent that much time at all. It was so much fun.

Priya:

Thanks!

Do take pictures of the visarjan and post them!

We spoke to a friend in the Bay Area today. He said that they did visarjan for about 50 Ganesh's in a 'tank', today. After that, they went to the Bay to do the 'rest of the formalities.'

Do post recipes of your undrallu and the payasam.

This is your first Ganesh Chaturthi in your new home, isn't it? It's ours, too. So even though we had an invitation for dinner, we chose to stay home and do a little puja.
